Akron, CO (AKO)

It was another beautiful, June day, in the neighborhood.
Perfect for heading east to the plains for another town along Highway US34.
Akron is a small town, with a small airport and a big runway. We were sure
to fly at a low enough altitude stay below the low ceiling in the Denver
Class B airspace. Taking off early in the morning accomplishes
two things. We avoid the afternoon thermals and also the cumulus build-up
that is typical of summers in Colorado.
Flying east along Hwy 34 is our main route. You go
past Fort Morgan, Brush and then there's Akron. If you need fuel,
they have a self-serve pump. Bring your own tie-down ropes since there are
anchors in the ramp, but I didn't see any chain or ropes.
The airport is only about a 1/4 mile walk before you hit the edge of town.
Downtown is close as you walk through wide, tree lined residential streets.
Don't expect much activity on Sunday. We only saw one place that qualified
as a restaurant and it was closed. There might be more, but we
didn't see anything on our route.
Development
keeps moving east. |
